We all know that elected officials are all people who have a past, just like everyone else. What do you think would happen if you hired a private investigator to do a background search on elected officials in Amsterdam? Even a search going across 3 different states could dig up some interesting stuff. What do you think would be the outcome? Would the public really want to know? Is it there right to know who they hire?

Sometimes I find myself thinking about the little niceties in my day that so many people take for granted. We really do have it pretty good here in America. If you take a walk in the worst ghetto in America, which I have done, I always remember that it is much worse in other places in the world. Some places have no running water, electricity or food. Some places have rampant disease and war like we are not accustomed to. Have we become complacent in little bubbles of comfort?
All that we can be thankful for was provided for us by a veteran. The endless stories provided recently by Bob Going on www.rgoing.livejournal.com are a testament to the sacrifice by those men and women who have fought for this country. After the many wars our people have fought, the blood spilled and the deafening silence of those who have died, the least we could do is take a few dollars out of our pockets to support the Amsterdam Veteran commissions goal of a new memorial. Poor Richard Amsterdam

In 1732, Benjamin Franklin started publishing Poor Richards Almanac. This became very popular reading material to many in the Philadelphia area as well as many other places in the colonies. In those days, Philadelphia like the City of Amsterdam had many difficulties. Poor Richards Almanac was in fact an anonymous writing that was meant to both entertain and bring about accomplishments. The anonymous writings found in Poor Richard lead to such things as the first lending library in America and the first fire department in Philadelphia. The point was to write and urge others to take action. Was Benjamin Franklin cowardly because he wrote anonymously? Have I said anything that isn’t the truth?
Young people in this city are sick and tired of where we live. We are sick of the problems that NEVER seem to be addressed. There has been much talk of who exactly I am. I am not an elected official, though I do know very well the person people think I am. We frequently commiserate in the same places and exchange ideas. For your information, my name is Jessica. I am a young woman who has lived in Amsterdam for about 10 years. I work locally at an adult home.
Quite frankly I wouldn’t be writing on here if the City of Amsterdam was where it needed to be. Ask yourself this… Is our codes department running effectively? Are our taxes affordable and such that they spur growth? Do we have a very small unemployment rate here? Is our city as clean as it could be? Do we have a low number of welfare recipients? Do we have a government that represents the will of the people everyday? Do we have enough for our young people to do? Do we have enough cultural activities here? SOMEBODY isn’t doing their job. Who is anyone to tell me I shouldn’t speak anonymously if I choose? Fix those problems and I wouldn’t be here now would I? Do we even have a clear plan to move forward, a plan that is working and seeing results in this city? I don’t really know if the young people who got elected recently are going to have the answers. We should give them a chance though.

Veteran blogger and newsman Charlie K wrote a blog today concerning a new contender that may have emerged in local blogs. Yes that would be this blog he is referring to. Yes another anonymous blog you may say but then again don’t I have that right? No I won’t censor your posts like wildthane either. If you disagree with me on issues thats perfectly fine.
I have always loved Charlie K’s blogging. He writes on some of the most pressing issues with great humor and wit. City of Amsterdam mayor Ann Thane is meeting with Congressman Paul Tonko and Senator Gillibrand today to talk about waterfront development. According to a news release from Gillibrand’s office, the meeting will be squeezed between a 1:30 with Fulton County and a 3:00 with Schenectady Mayor Stratton.
So let me get this straight right now. These 2 big elected officials are going to delve into waterfront development in a matter of 15 minutes? Does that sound logical? If that is the case why not just make a conference call with each other? Unless you want the media to take pictures of you haha. Maybe its a rushed 15 minute meeting that got us millions of dollars for a bridge that we have to maintain. Maybe its a rushed meeting that led to the creation of a beautiful park 10 feet away from the train tracks with horns blowing constantly. It looks to me like a poorly set up meeting for no real reason at all other than media picture opportunities. My question is: Was there any real planning for the current bridge? The answer is obviously not because there just making designs now.

There’s an article in the Recorder today talking about the future and current situation at the Noteworthy indian museum. A business owner is quoted as saying it’s in poor taste for me to open that building while people are experiencing layoffs. What would Amsterdam do if this business that is close to bankruptcy actually went bankrupt? Go through any information you would like but it appears that too many years of big political contributions, museums and christmas centers have led another business to near financial ruin. Who payed for the direct mailers for Duchessi during his campaign for mayor? So whats the moral of this story?

I must say that I am a very cynical person when it comes to government. Government in essence is a slow-moving machine with so many kinks that even the smallest task seems to be difficult beyond belief. Let’s get one thing straight off the bat, I am cynical of ALL elected officials. How about Amsterdam NY? Is our government any different? Our government moves at the pace of a turtle. Code enforcement, potholes, lack of funds, growing taxes, inability to create jobs, priorities confused, political fighting and nonsense in general puts our people and government into shock. Where do we begin? How do we move forward? Of course there can’t be any ONE answer I believe. Our answers must be a collection of good actions, not just one.

Hello to all. Welcome to Amsterdam Revealed on word press. I will attempt to give an interesting look into politics in Amsterdam NY. Amsterdam is located in Upstate NY and like many places locally has many difficulties associated with old mill towns. Amsterdam was at one time home to the most millionaires per capita in the country. Amsterdam was at one time a vibrant, economically thriving city and a powerhouse in upstate NY. At one time the demographics reported over 50,000 people living in the city of Amsterdam, much different from the now 18,000. While dealing with the downsizing of city infrastructure and the desertion of local mills which were main employers, the city has remained a close knit community with many strengths. Over the past many years, economics seem to have been polarized in the city. Many people are seemingly bewildered and have struggled to change the city. It is obvious that this confusion continues today and the political atmosphere can attest to that fact. Let’s have fun on this blog and take a trip into debate. By studying ourselves and debating facts and falsehoods we may find the very solutions we need. We will however find ourselves if we look closely with an ice-cold eye.
